WireTripper and the new ScapeFilms.com

Hello everyone. Welcome to the new ScapeFilms.com.

WireTripper is our new short film going into production next month. It’s short but sweet. Our first science fiction film and I’m geeked about it. Sci-Fi is my favorite genre but strangely enough, we have yet to actually make a sci-fi film. We seem to be stuck in this whole drama-horror-comedy rut, which is nice, but now I feel like I get to spread my wings just a little more now. Growing up on trilogies like Star Wars and Alien, sci-fi films have been an inspiration for a lifetime. While I have written sci-fi films in the past it just never seemed like I got around to making them.

This film isn’t overly complex and doesn’t sport a host of great special effects. It’s pretty mild when it comes to sci-fi. But it explores some interesting concepts and it’s a great starter film for getting into making more sci-fi flicks.

Right now we are accepting headshots and resumes for the film, and if you have them, short video clips of your acting. You can send this information using our contact page or better yet our message forum. Or hell you could just reply here with a link to your website if you have one. But before you do definitely check out the WireTripper page for more information.

As for the new website… guess what? I scrapped the old site and spent three weeks building a brand new one from scratch. One that was iTunes inspired and looked pretty cool. But before I launched it I realized I wasn’t that thrilled with it, so in a days time switched gears and rebuilt the whole website a different way using wordpress. As a result we get all this cool functionality and blogging ability we wouldn’t have had. It’s pretty cool and I hope you guys enjoy it too. Feel free to sign up. That’s right you can sign up to this new site, just hit the register link on the side.

Prey for the new Vampire

Years ago I wrote a short film titled Vampire that I had planned to shoot. Steve and I even spent a day location scouting for churches we could use. I still feel horrible about walking into that one church and asking them if we could use it for a vampire film. The lady looked at us like we were some kind of devil worshippers. It didn’t help that both of us had just so happened to be wearing all black, something we didn’t realize until later. Sometimes common sense and decency just slips my mind. Yikes!

Well… I’ve been sitting on the script for years now. Like I have with so many of my scripts, so I decided I would put it out there to see if any other filmmakers would be interested in shooting it. I got a response back pretty quickly from a woman who goes by the username BlueBee. She was really nice and wanted to take it on as her first filmmaking project. Awesome I thought. She then passed the story onto Richard McClure who I’ve known over the net for years. In fact he’s the guy I passed The Sanctuary onto when I got tired of running it. Very cool guy. He rewrote the story and retitled it Prey. I got a copy of the script and it is different on the surface but the core of it is still the same. He did a good job and I’m excited to see it as a movie.

On December 9th and 10th the crew that BlueBee pulled together shot the short film out in California. I have yet to see the film or any production stills from it. I’m awaiting all that just the same as all of you hopefully soon to be fans of it. But I did get this really cool t-shirt and a sweet Christmas card. Thanks BlueBee.

Reworking an old script (action=money) or not

I said I didn’t want to jump back into another feature right way. That I wanted to do a few shorts first. So maybe it’s stupid of me to suddenly consider doing another feature. Or at least starting the preproduction on one, which includes the script.

The script I have is at about 80 pages. 10 to 20 more could finsih the movie as it stands right now. This script has been written over the course of many many years. I’m talking 10 years here in some form or another. I keep coming back to it. I always wrote it as something I could shoot on a budget. But my style of writing today is different then it was say two years ago when I last worked on it. Back then my work was mostly dialogue driven. As can be seen in my feature. Today I’m focusing more on action. Since I noticed my movies tend to be a little boring without enough action.

I think I’ve always shyed away from action when writing because it usually equals money in my mind (action=money). But these days I notice I really need it. I figure a movie should be 50/50 dialogue/action. And when I say action I don’t mean gun fights and explosions half the time. But rather just something interesting to look at other then somebodies face talking.

My problem is trying to figure out where to put this action into my exisiting story. I fear having to rewrite the entire film. But maybe it’s somethign I have to do.

I realize no one can help me much without actually reading the script. I’m just venting to myself really.

The Great Divide

For years I’ve been looking for a way to balance out my amatuer / silly side of filmmaking with my more professional aspirational side of it.

Star Wars Episode 3

When I was about 4 or 5 years old I was taken to the movie theater in the mall to see Star Wars: Return of the Jedi. I don’t remember the movie so much as I remember walking out of the theater and into a KB toystore where my parents bought me a Darth Vader lightsaber. They were sold out of the Luke Skywalker green sabers.

Should film be harder to break into?

Seems a silly idea. But it’s true. Those in power want to remain in power and they’ll do so however they can. Only letting in certain people at a time who can help sustain their power (profit).

Welcome to the commentary.

I felt I wanted a journal just for my thoughts on making independent films and the world of films in general.
I have several journals as it is and post my thoughts on such things at several filmmaking messagebaords. But what the hell, why not one more.

This journal will be about my own films as well as the world of filmmaking in general. Including films I see, filmmaking techniques and equipment that looks of interest to me. And whatever else.
