Midnight Oil
No, this is not a story about a romantic late night massage. Though it is intimate in a mechanical way. I spent the last couple of evenings replacing an intake manifold gasket in my car. Oh what fun it is to hide under the hood of a Buick Century- HEY! Obviously I would much rather be paying attention to my "mistress of the ice". I heard one of the lakes we ride on already has seven inches, maybe tonight she will get some attention.
Getting the garage warmed up, and the rock n' roll going is half the fun. My cross training for the winter is carrying wood up from out of the swamp. I try to get a couple of runs down the "sledding hill of death" too if there is snow. Taking my time, tweaking, massaging, and repairing machines that give me my adrenaline fix is necessary to ride them hard. Sometimes till the wee hours of the morning, feeding the stove, fabricating parts, and remembering when it was an every weekend ritual. Before I was married, sometimes my bike was in the living room the night before a race.
So my garage, or "dog house", as I call it is full of oil that I often get into after midnight. Shock oil, fork oil, motor oil, two-stoke oil, penetrating oil, what ever it takes to keep the "mistress" well lubricated and running strong. Gee, maybe this is one of those stories!
The rewards of burning the midnight oil, elbow to elbow, with nothing but teeth showing under the helmet. An incredible adrenaline fix.
